Rolls-Royce launches the Coachbuild Droptail Roadster: The Black Rose

Rolls-Royce is delighted to present the Roadster Droptail Coachbuild, whose first expression is the Black Rose Droptail, thus completing the third chapter in its contemporary coachbuilding history. Art is in motion!

The result of a four-year collaboration with a highly select group of the brand's most visionary clients, Droptail represents a modern interpretation of the roadster body style for the first time in the brand's contemporary era. Defined by its intimate and cozy interior, Droptail celebrates the romance of two-seater motoring. Only four Droptails will be built in total, each a unique expression of the character of the client who commissioned it.

Droptail is radically unique in its proportions: a low, assertive stance, a comfortable, enveloping cabin space, and taut, balanced upholstery underline its driver-oriented nature. The profile is defined by the "sail hoods"—sharp, angular shapes that rise behind the doors and curve gently inward, indicating that this is a strict two-seater. The magnificent rear deck section, which sits behind the occupants, serves an aerodynamic function, producing downforce that improves the vehicle's stability when traveling at high speeds.

For Droptail, the designers dared to reinterpret the brand's most cherished iconography: the Pantheon grille and Badge of Honor. The grille fins are "bent" upwards from the radiator to create a "temple brow"-like overhang—a first for Rolls-Royce. To ensure the Droptail's monolithic surfaces are not interrupted, the Rolls-Royce Badge of Honor is reduced to an elegant stainless steel "Double R" monogram.

A removable hardtop was designed to give Droptail two very distinct characters: without its roof, Droptail is a lightweight, open-top roadster; with the roof installed, it is a formidable and dramatic coupé. The roof incorporates electrochromic glass that alters the amount of light entering the cabin at the touch of a button.

Droptail celebrates the intimacy of a two-seater roadster with a cocooning interior, protecting occupants with a high seatbelt and a low seating position. The cabin serves as an unprecedented canvas for highly customized woodworking. The most visible surface is the curved shawl panel—a vast, uninterrupted section of wood that surrounds the driver and companion.

The interior is defined by minimalism and analog tactility—only three main buttons are visible, but all contemporary features are retained. A theatrical, cantilevered, pedestal-like armrest located between the two seats elegantly conceals the rotating information. At the touch of a button, the pedestal slides back and forth, providing effortless access to the entertainment system controller.

The Black Rose Droptail: distilled glamour

Today, the brand presents the first individual Droptail commission – Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail: a dark, bold, and dramatic coachwork masterpiece commissioned by an international family that epitomizes refinement. The Rose Noire Droptail is inspired by the romantic nature of two-seater travel and the allure of the Black Baccara rose, dear to the mother of the commissioning family.

The dark pomegranate color of its petals appears almost black, but in direct light, a pearly red shimmer is revealed on the dark surface. These two colors constitute the primary palette of La Rose Noire Droptail.

The upper body is finished in a seductive, glossy red tone with a deep black base, called “True Love,” which mimics the infinitely changing coloration of the Black Baccara rose, the result of over 150 iterations.

The gloss work is covered with a unique dark finish, called Hydroshade due to its liquid quality, which was developed specifically for this project. The “True Love” paint is subtly hand-applied to the underside of the Pantheon grille fins. The striking alloy wheels feature the Dark Mystery paint: like the flower itself, from a distance the paint appears to be black, but sunlight reveals shimmering dark red hues.

The Black Rose Droptail's removable hardtop has been designed with a completely unique shape: its low appearance is further exaggerated by a steeper, longer slope, emphasizing its assertive and glamorous character. For the first time at Rolls-Royce, the car's name is subtly visible, engraved on an ingot carefully inserted into the roof ridge.

The interior of La Rose Noir Droptail features the most intricate marquetry ever created by Rolls-Royce. An abstract rendering of falling rose petals is formed using 1 pieces of black sycamore veneer, each cut, sanded, and positioned by hand. 600 symmetrical elements, crafted from woods with different natural patterns, form the background, and 1 asymmetrical pieces, hand-painted red, represent the rose petals. It took more than a year to perfect the lacquer formula used to create the red pieces, which ensures the paint does not fade over time.

The motif is echoed in the artwork on the aft deck and also appears on the sides of the bespoke champagne chest, which contains champagne from one of the client's favorite wine estates in France. The rose theme continues with the seat trim, which combines dark red 'Mystery' leather and light red 'True Love' leather, both finished with a subtle copper sheen, evoking the pearly texture of the petals of the Black Baccara rose.

The dashboard features an integrated Audemars Piguet timepiece, specially commissioned by the client. Designed to be removable for wear, the watch is smoothly presented at the touch of a button, thanks to the specially designed motorized clasp mechanism, while a soft leather pouch kept in the door bag houses the bracelet. Once the timepiece is removed, the opening in the fascia is covered with an elegant white gold piece engraved with a rose.
