Piper-Heidsieck, when champagne becomes a legend

Piper-Heidsieck, when champagne becomes a legend

In the world of great bubbles, some Champagne houses seduce as much by their champagnes as by the stories they tell. Piper–Heidsieck is one of those that transcends time with panache. Between myth, modernity and elegance, the Reims house continues to write a story where each vintage seems to carry the memory of a century.

At the origins: a draper, a queen, a destiny

The adventure begins in 1785, in Reims.
Florens-Louis Heidsieck, a draper from Westphalia, traded fabrics for vines. He dreamed of a champagne "fit for a queen." Legend has it that he himself presented his wine to Marie-AntoinetteThe bold and theatrical gesture will mark the beginnings of a house destined to reign on the tables of the world.

A few decades later, his nephew Christian Heidsieck team up with Henri-Guillaume Piper, a talented trader. From this alliance is born an eternal signature: Piper–HeidsieckIn the 19th century, the house became the champagne house of royal courts, from Vienna to Beijing. French elegance was exported, the Reims cellars expanded, and the name became firmly established in the Champagne firmament.

Resist, be reborn, reinvent yourself

The Second World War put the house to the test. Placed under sequestration, it owes its survival to Yolande Kunkelmann d'Aulan, a courageous figure, who protected the cellars and relaunched production after the Liberation. His son, François d'Aulan, then brings a modern breath and an international opening.

In 1988, Piper-Heidsieck joined Rémy Cointreau, then in 2011 the EPI group of the Descours family, also owner of Charles Heidsieck. Under this new impetus, the house refocuses on its know-how, modernizes its facilities and undertakes a pioneering environmental approach. 2022, it becomes one of the first certified Champagne houses B Corp.

B Corp, two letters that change everything. This international label recognizes companies that combine economic performance with a positive impact on the world. Obtained after a rigorous audit conducted by the independent organization B Lab, the certification assesses more than 200 criteria : respect for the environment, ethical governance, social responsibility, transparency and sustainability of the production chain.

En 2022, Piper–Heidsieck became the first major champagne house to be certified B CorpThis recognition crowns several years of efforts: reduction of the carbon footprint, limitation of waste, increased use of renewable energies and concrete commitment to partner winegrowers.
Under the leadership of his cellar master Émilien Boutillat, the Reims house has chosen to include its production in a sustainable dynamic, a champagne of excellence, but also of conscience.

A style: freshness, precision, brilliance

From the first sip, the Piper-Heidsieck style is evident: a balance between liveliness, fruit, and mineral tension. The aromas of green apple and brioche follow one another with finesse, carried by a fine and regular bubble.

If the house grows its own 65 hectares : , she collaborates with more than 240 winegrowers distributed 110 vintagesThis mosaic of terroirs, from the Montagne de Reims to the Marne Valley, nourishes an aromatic palette of rare complexity and bears witness to the richness of the Champagne terroirs.

A 21st century cellar: The cellar designed by the architect Jacques Ferrier in 2008 is a jewel of engineering. Today, Émilien Boutillat, a young, passionate cellar master, embodies the house's renewal. His philosophy: let the wine speak, without artifice, in search of the right emotion.

Essential White of Black

The iconic vintages

Cuvée Brut, the timeless signature

Piper-Heidsieck's identity card, the Cuvée Brut embodies the house style in its purest form. Crafted from more than 100 vintages and the three Champagne grape varieties, Pinot Noir (majority), Meunier and Chardonnay, It offers a subtle balance between freshness and fullness.
On the nose, notes of citrus, pear, and green apple intertwine with more brioche-like and lightly toasted notes. On the palate, fine, precise bubbles support a substance that is both lively and silky. The whole thing ends with a straight and clean finish, imbued with minerality.
This versatile cuvée can be enjoyed as an aperitif or with a meal, with sea bass carpaccio, creamed poultry, or a simple soft cheese platter. It's the champagne for spontaneous moments, elegant, sincere, and true to the spirit of the house.

Essentiel Extra Brut, rigor and precision

A clean version of the house style, Essential Extra Brut is aimed at lovers of drier, more taut champagnes. A blend of long-aged reserve wines and vintages selected for their liveliness, this cuvée has a deliberately minimal dosage (around 5 g/L).
The nose is frank and pure, marked by notes of candied lemon, wet chalk, and fresh hazelnut. On the palate, the tension is immediate: a straightforwardness that stretches over saline flavors and a delicately chalky texture.
This champagne is perfect for fine dining: flat oysters, sashimi, ceviche, or hard cheeses. A precise, almost chiseled wine that illustrates Émilien Boutillat's desire to reposition Piper-Heidsieck in a dynamic of terroir and raw expression.

Essential Blanc de Blancs, the brilliance of Chardonnay

This pure Chardonnay, produced mainly from the Côte des Blancs, celebrates the grace and verticality of the king grape variety of chalky soils.
On the nose, a floral and airy palette of acacia blossom, lime blossom, lemon zest, and fresh almond herald a crystalline, taut, and refined palate. The bubbles are caressing, and the finish is long, straight, and subtly salty.
This Blanc de Blancs pairs perfectly with delicate dishes: sea bream sashimi, scallop carpaccio, fine oysters or risotto with lemon and fresh herbs.
It is a vintage that embodies the light of the Piper-Heidsieck style, between elegance and purity.

Rosé Sauvage, the flamboyant expression

A true chromatic signature of the house, the Wild Rosé is not a shy rosé. Its intense pink color sets the tone: it is a champagne with character, fruity, sensual, festive.
Composed mainly of Pinot Noir vinified into red, it offers an explosion of wild strawberries, redcurrants and candied raspberries on the nose, enhanced by a hint of spice. On the palate, the flesh of the fruit asserts itself, supported by a fresh and slightly peppery structure.
This is the ultimate champagne for conviviality: it goes perfectly with tuna tartare, duck breast, or even a red fruit dessert. Rosé Sauvage lives up to its name; it expresses the joy and freedom dear to the house.

Rare Vintage, the jewel of the house

Apart from the collection, the vintage Rare is a world unto itself. Born from exceptional years and from rigorously selected vintages, it symbolizes the art of patience and the mastery of time.
Its assembly, dominated by the Chardonnay (often around 70%), is completed by a Pinot Noir of great nobility. After more than 10 years of aging on lees, the wine achieves a fascinating balance between opulence and freshness.
On the nose, complex notes of roasted pineapple, candied ginger, acacia honey, and dried fruit. On the palate, the texture is silky and full, with a finish of pinpoint precision.
It is a champagne for contemplation, to be served with roast lobster, turbot with beurre blanc or an old comté. Rare embodies the most noble and timeless dimension of the Piper-Heidsieck style: the search for the sublime through slowness and precision.

Essentiel Blanc de Noirs, depth in full light

Latest addition to the collection Essential, this vintage pays homage to black grape varieties, 80% of Pinot Noir et 20% of MillerThe wine reveals itself in a deep gold, crossed by a delicate bubble.
On the nose: yellow fruits evolving into red and black fruits with spicy notes of honey and paprika.
On the palate: crisp and delicious, with citrus and raspberry flavors.
Dosage: Extra Brut.
Aging: 36 months on lees.
Perfect chords: Roast poultry, mushroom risotto, stuffed quail, or scallop carpaccio with chorizo. A champagne for the table above all, which fully expresses itself throughout the meal.

When cinema invites itself into the cup

It's hard to separate Piper-Heidsieck from the screen: Laurel and Hardy, Marilyn Monroe, the Cannes Film Festival, and even the Oscars... The house cultivates this unique connection with glamour. But behind the glitter, one thing is certain: the star is the wine. More than 275 medals international standards attest to the consistency of its style and the quality of its blends.

Today, Piper-Heidsieck is reinventing itself. More conscious, more grounded, the house combines high standards and creativity. It remains true to what it has always been: a champagne of light and truth. Its challenge? To continue to combine celebration and rigor, prestige and sincerity, to further surprise those who think they know everything about Champagne.

Piper-Heidsieck represents the balance between past and future, between the grace of a name and the strength of a terroir.
A champagne that celebrates life, but above all, excellence.
