Electric fluidity for the Porsche Macan

Electric fluidity for the Porsche Macan

Porsche is discontinuing combustion engines on its Macan, which is now available in two all-electric versions with 100 and 387 horsepower. Too bad? No, because this SUV offers a smooth, dynamic ride and the ability to travel far, thanks to its 584 kWh battery.

It was the official car of the last MET Gala in New York. The one that, in its silent operation, the luxurious comfort of its interior, transported the guests without emitting a single gram of CO2. The brand new Tiger thus took advantage of an incomparable showcase to confirm Porsche's desire to strengthen its commitment to electromobility, which should lead it to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Because the Porsche Macan is now, and forever, a 100% electric car. It completes the German manufacturer's zero-emission range, alongside the various versions of the Taycan. This SUV, highly appreciated in its segment because it has always prioritized sportiness, is in fact abandoning its thermal blocks. This may seem surprising for a model that has enjoyed considerable success since its launch in 2014 and still sold 87.355 units in 2023. But the current version will be banned from sale in Europe from 1er July, as it is impossible to adapt to EU safety standards, mandatory driver assistance systems, and is too vulnerable to cybercrime. However, it will still be available for purchase in non-EU countries.

Two versions

This new SUV, designed on the new PPE platform, which it shares with the Audi Q6, retains the dynamic look of the previous model, with its coupé-like style, its curved volumes, and its sloping hood. We recognize the Porsche DNA in the flight of its roofline, this "flyline" which gives it a resolutely sporty profile. Even if, at 4,78 m, it is 6 cm longer than the previous model, it cultivates its status more than ever as car sports car among SUVs. It has improved aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient that drops from 0,35 to 0,25 thanks to the underbody fairing and air intakes with movable flaps. It adopts the Taycan's rectangular daytime running lights, with four horizontal lines of light per lens, while the headlights are housed a little lower, in the air intakes.

This model has remained true to its standards, combining luxury and electric performance. It is offered in two all-wheel drive versions, Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. The first offers a power of 387 horsepower, which increases to 408 horsepower with overboost; the second, equipped with a larger rear motor, offers 584 horsepower and 639 with overboost. They are efficient since one accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,2 s, the other in 3,3 s. Both versions use the same battery of 100 kWh gross, or 95 kWh net, which gives them respective ranges of 613 and 591 km WLTP.

Modernized interior

Inside, the Macan has been modernized. It has a curved 12,6-inch screen for the (digital) instrumentation, with an augmented reality head-up display for the GPS. In the center, a 10,9-inch central surface integrates into the verticality of the dashboard. For the passenger, there is the option of a third 10,9-inch screen which, thanks to a filter, remains opaque for the driver. The floating center console houses a small, very practical unit with physical buttons for the air conditioning.

The Macan 4 doesn't have air suspension. It's therefore a bit stiff, but it's still pleasant and easy to drive, despite its weight of 2.330 kg! The position of the battery pack gives it a fairly low center of gravity. This gives it remarkable balance. The car is precise when entering corners, turns flat, and shows no signs of traction issues. This version is sold for €86.439.

The Macan Turbo offers supersonic acceleration with its 1.130 Nm of torque! This version is equipped with the Porsche Vectoring system, which allows it to transfer more torque to the outside wheels and therefore improve both its traction when exiting corners and its handling. Since it also benefits from four-wheel steering and air suspension, it proves devilish in the twisties. A car this powerful can lead you to overdrive. Therefore, the Macan 4's fluidity may seem sufficient. This Turbo version is sold for €118.910.

Charging at 270 kW

Equipped with an 800-volt network, the Porsche Macan charges in DC at a power of 270 kW. It takes just 21 minutes to go from 10 to 80% battery capacity. It is also equipped with an 11 kW AC charger. It takes 10 hours to refill the battery (0 to 100%) on a wallbox of this capacity. Its battery pack is guaranteed for 8 years or 160.000 kilometers. Both versions come standard with a heat pump. There is also a 150 W hi-fi system, distributed by 10 speakers on the Macan 4, while the Turbo version has a 710 W Bose pack. The trunk volume is 540 liters. There is an additional front trunk of 80 liters.
